NEW DELHI: Google on Monday remembered M S Subbulakshmi, a renowned Carnatic vocalist, on her 97th birthday with a doodle. In 1998, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor.
Born on September 16, 1916 in Madurai, Madras Presidency, to a family who loved music, Subbulakshmi started her training in Carnatic music under her mother Shanmugavadivu. Even her grandmother was a violinist.
M S Subbulakshmi's passion towards music started from an early stage when she started learning Carnatic music under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. She was also trained in Hindustani music under the guidance of Pandit Narayanrao Vyas.
At a very young age, M S Subbulakshmi gave her first debut performance and earned acclamations from critics. She became popular as a Carnatic vocalist after a few public performances.
Besides Carnatic music, she also performed a variety of devotional musical forms in different languages including Bengali, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and more.
M S Subbulakshmi was also honored with other prestigious awards such as, Padma Bhushan (1954), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1956), Padma Vibhushan (1975), Kalidas Samman (1988) and Sangeetha Kalanidhi (1968).
She was the first woman recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award (1974) and also the first musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna.
Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar called her Tapaswini (the Renunciate).
To pay tribute to M S Subbulakshmi a commemorative postage stamp was issued on December 18, 2005.
She died in December 11, 2004.
Google commemorates M S Subbulakshmi with an attractive doodle. The doodle depicts the musician playing a tambura and surrounded by musical instruments.
