VITOBA THE NECTAR 14

Dear Children
Did you notice a similarity in all these stories? The heros of all these stories were very poor. Why? We may estimate them in our standards as "poor". In fact they were rich. They never wanted luxury, never cared to save for the future, did not entertain any attachment. They were most contented with what little is required for sustenance were most simple people who gave away whatever they had to others. They were all true devotees of Pandurangan. True to the saying that GOD takes care of his sincere devotees, HE rescued his devotees whenever they were in trouble. When God is with a person, what other wealth one needs?
In this story, HE answered his true devotee's call. Let us see how he saved his devotee Gora Kumbar.
Gora Kumbar was a potter. He earned his living by making mud pots. He spent the money he earned on annadhanam to Pandurangan devotees. His wife's name was Baga. Both of them were ardent devotees of Pandurangan.
Do you know the potter goes through a lot of process before making the final product? Let us see what they are.
First he has to dig and get the proper mud, the right type. Then mix it with water and make the clay. With the clay he would make the pot fixing the clay lump in the mould attached to a wheel. The size and type of the pot under preparation is designed by the mould which evenly thickens by the moving wheel. The wet pot is removed and kept in the open for drying. Finally, he would put it in a heat chamber to make it strong. After a couple of days or so, he would remove the heated pots from the chamber, carry the pots on his head to the market for sale.
Throughout the whole process and also while counting the money he got by way of sale of his pots, Kumbar used to chant only Pandurangan's name. Because of this, people called him a stupid, fool, crazy man etc. But these comments did not bother Kumbar.
One day, he kept all his pots as usual in the hot chamber. At that time, a cat came near him and cried. The cat kept on circling him and drawing his attention. He did not notice it initially. The capt kept crying and wanted to reach the chamber but could not go near it because of the heat. Gora Kumbar noticed only then the cat's attempts to go near the hot chamber. He could not understand why the cat was trying to move into the hot chamber.
His wife Baga also heard the cat's crying and came out of the hut. She suddenly remembered something. She called Gora "Alas. Gora, what have you done? This cat had kept its three kittens in one of the drying pots early this morning. Didn't you notice? I think you have kept that pot also in the hot chamber for burning. That is why this cat is crying". He was thinking of Vittala all the time, singing about Him, and did not notice thekittens inside a pot and had arranged the pots inside the chamber and had already set fire to it to spread the heat. The chamber was now burning hot. Kumbar realised his mistake and the cat's agony for the safety of her kittens.
Gora realised his blunder. He prayed "Hare Vittal! Hey Panduranga! I have committed a big sin. You please punish me but do not punish the innocent small kittens. If you feel that my devotion to you is true, please save those kittens and let them not die".
Normally the hot chamber, once the fire is put off, will take 3 days to cool down and only then the pots inside the chamber can be taken out for washing and selling. So for the next 3 days Gora did not sleep or eat his food. He was all the time praying to Vittal to forgive him for having killed the 3 kittens. His wife Baga comforted him but he was restless and feeling guilty to see the mother cat always going near the chamber and trying best to have access inside it.
The third day, the chamber got cooled and Gora hurriedly removed the heated earthen pots looking inside each and every one. The cat came running to him as he was removing each pot from the oven. The cat identified the pot she used to keep her kittens. Gora was nervous and the moment he looked into the pot where the kittens were kept by the cat, he found 3 kittens safely sleeping. He saw the cat pulling them out of the pot and removing them to safety. Gora folded his hands and looked up crying "Jay Vittal Jay Vittal" He danced in ecstacy. He was very happy that his Vittl had saved the 3 kittens in the burning chamber.
Kumbar was so touched by Pandurangan's kindness in saving the kittens' lives.
Dear children once again remember God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent and saves us all if we think of him and appeal to him.
