Dear children,
26. MAGIC STONE
In Pandaripuram, there lived a Bhagavathar. He lived in the same street where Namadever lived. In fact, they studied together at the gurukulam. He had a magic stone and people called him Magic stone Bhagavarthar.
In the early days, he also joined Namadevar in Vittalan bhajans. All of a sudden he lost interest in it. He felt that Vittalan did not give him anything in return for his bhajans and he would be better off doing Lakshmi puja to get more wealth. So he went on to do severe fasting, chanting, prayers etc to Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi was pleased with his determination. She gave him a magic stone. This stone had special powers to convert all the iron products into gold. Bhagavathar converted all the iron stuff he had at home and changed them to gold.
Then he picked the iron nails from the road and made them gold. Now tell me children; when someone is greedy to make money, do you think he would sing Vittalan Bhajans? Bhagavathar did not join in the Vittalan bhajans. Namadevar felt very sad but he consoled himself and took it as Vittalan's game.
Namadevar's wife Rajayee was a good friend of Bhagavathar's wife. Both of them used to go together to the Chandrabagha river for bath and to bring water. They used to discuss everything from A to Z during that time.
Rajayee asked Bhagavathar's wife "How come you are wearing so much gold and nice saree? Where did you get them?".
She replied "I shall tell you but do not tell anyone about it. Now a days my husband does not do Vittalan bhajans. Instead, he did some Lakshmi puja and got a magic stone which has the power to convert iron to gold. He offers prayer to this stone daily and keeps it very safe in box. But please do not tell this to any one".
Rajayee complained "You know Namadevar. Always he engages himself in Vittalan bhajans. He does not earn an income. There is no money at all. Only my mother and I beg for alms from others to feed all of us. That is how we are managing. Can you please give the stone to me just for one day?. We have lot of rusted iron nails. I will convert them all to gold and give it back to you".
Bhagavathar's wife gave the stone to Rajayee. She took it home and started changing the iron nails and needles to gold. Namadevar came home early that day and saw his wife changing the iron to gold. He enquired her and found out everything. He realised that greed was changing his wife also like Bhagavathar. Suddnely he shouted "Vittala" and took the stone. He ran to Chandrabhaga river and threw it. The stone went deep inside the river. He came back home peacefully.
Next day, out of fear, Rajayee did not meet bhagavathar's wife. There at the Bhagavathar's house, he sat for prayers. He prayed to Lakshmi and opened the safe. There was no stone. He searched everywhere and asked his wife. She told him everything.
Immediately he went to Namadevar's house and asked for the stone. Namadevar tried to calm him down but Bhagavathar was in no mood to listen to any preaching. He was very angry and shouted. He nagged Namadevar for the stone. Namadevar said "I threw it in the Chandrabhaga river". Bhagavathar rushed to the river. How could he find the stone?. Like a mad man he was shouting "Give me my stone now". He scolded Namadevar and Vittalan using very bad words. Namadevar could bear scolding from anyone but could not tolerate anyone criticising Vittalan.
He felt sad for this man and prayed "Hey Vittala! Please forgive me for throwing the stone into the river. Please help him to get his stone. Whatever I say does not get into his mind. He is scolding not only me but you also". He closed his eyes and prayed to Vittalan wholeheartedly. Then he took Bhagavathar to the Chandrabagha river and took a dip. Namadevar took whatever stones he could find in the river and gave them to bhagavathar. Bhagavathar saw the stones and realised that they were all big magic stones. He realised Namadevar's real devotion to Pandurangan and threw back all the stones into the river. He fell at Namadevar's feet and apologised for his mad behaviour. Then what happened? Do we have to say? Ofcourse he also joined Namadevar in Vittalan bhajans.
