Dear Children
90 ’’Bheema's valour ‘’
Sometimes when you think it will make you wonder, andyou will be stupefied and dumb founded at the fertile imagination and narration of the story of Mahabharath by sage Vyasa.
I felt so repeatedly whenever I read any chapter of this great epic. The characters are all immortal and we re-live the days of Krishna.
Mahabharath war did happen and there are evidences of it here and there all over the country. Though thousands of years of change had erased most of the past, still we have trace of it. Our ancestors have left some markings for us and it is our bounden duty to preserve them if not improve upon them for the posterity.
Kurukshethra war between Pandavas and Kauravas had been continuing. It was already four teen days since the war started.
Kurukshethra was getting filled with the bodies of the dea and pools of blood everywhere. Victory was not in sight for any one side. How many elephants, horses cames and men have lost their lives without a result. Broken chariots and arms are in heaps of mountains with eagles circling all over.
Today Aswaththama is leading the Kauravas. He is angry with Pandavas for killing his father, Dhronacharya and wished to kill them all before the day is out.
He had been well trained in archery by his illustrious father Dhronacharya. He has decided to use the Narayana asthram that day against Pandavas.
Narayana Asthram cannot be stopped once it is released until it finishes the target to attack and destroy which, it had been aimed.
Krishna understood the idea of Aswaththama. He was always carefully watchching the actions of the unpredictable Aswaththama. ‘’It is me and my own part’’ mused Krishna.
‘’Arjuna, Aswaththaman is before you in an angry mood. His only thought is to kill you for the death of his father by your arrows. He has chosen the Narayana Asthram to be sent direct to you. It is impossible to stop it once so directed. If any one drops down all the weapons and arms and surrender to it, then it will not attack those who surrender. Better all of you Pandavas do what I say. There is no escape from this danger otherwise.’’ News spread immediately to all those in Pandava forces. All of them threw down their weapons and sat with folded arms surrendering themselves. Only one person could not accept this.
Bheema, the strong and mighty muscle man of Pandavas could not entertain the idea of surrender. ‘’I will stop the Narayanasthram’’ he declared. The Narayanasthram was already on its way towards Pandava forces and it found no one to attack as everyone on its way had been without any weapon and was found in surrender mood. The Narayanasthram then looked for any one left before returning back to Aswaththama. Then it located Bheema in a defying posture and neared him. The weapon was moving towards Bheema with fire and heat. Bheema attacked it with his weapons, which were destroyed by the asthra. Everyone was bewildered at what was happening and were sure that Bheema’’s end had come. The fire and heat began torturing Bheema now.
‘’Bheema drop down your weapons immediately’’ shouted Arjuna to save his beloved brothe. Bheema never cared for it. He was fighting his best to contain the Asthram unsuccessfully. He was burning in parts.
‘’Arjuna employ the Varunasthram now to contain the fire and heat surrounding Bheema’’ said Krishna. It partly helped Bheema but it was certain that Bheema would be no more.
Krishna realised that the time has come for him to save Bheema. He got down from Arjuna’s chariot and ran towards Bheema in fire. He broke the cardon of fire created by the Narayanasthram and rached Bheema. He tightly embraced Bheema protecting him with his body. The Narayanasthram now began attacking Krishna and it was automatically ineffective against Krishna and moved away. Krishna pulled the weapons of Bheema and threw them away. Narayanasthram went away from Bheema and Krishna as there was no opposition. Once it went away and returned back it will not be usable anymore by Aswaththama. He was disappointed that his weapon did not prove successful in killing the Pandava heroes Arjuna or Bheema because of Krishna’s intervention.
‘’Bheema I adore your bravery and appreciate your decision to sacrifice even your life for the Pandavas knowing well the effect of Narayanasthram. No doubt you are a great and bold Kshathriya. You have exhibited your boldness and fearless attitude. Your strength and might at no time can match the divine power, do you understand’’ said Krishna who embraced Bheema affectionately.
Bheema saved by Krishna from death, could not speak his voice choked with emotion and gratitude for Krishna’s spontaneous effort to save his life. But Bheema’s eyes promptly replied Krishna with grateful tears.
