Dear Children
88 ‘’THE VOWS AND BOONS‘’
Day by day the war between Pandavas and Kauravas was growing tense and both sides were trying their best to destroy each other to the last man. So far nine days of continuous war had resulted in heavy losses on both sides. Still end was not in sight.
It was the 10th day of the war and Grand old Bhishma was in command of the Kaurava army and he had come to the war that day with a determination to end the war by destroying the Pandavas. Once Bhishma had decided something it can be viewed and taken as final and executed as per wish. He was invincible and mighty and was feared by every one and no one dared to fight with him.
So the 10th day war was very crucial and Arjuna on the one hand could not kill his beloved grand father who had a soft corner for him and on the other hand Bhishma could not be killed by any one in a fight. The day was slowly moving to dusk. There was a very big shock waiting for the Kauravas to completely upset them. All these first nine days, Bhishma was tormenting the Pandavas who had no answer to his various attacks on Pandavas and they managed so far. It was mainly due to Krishna they managed all the while.
As the day was ending Krishna said ‘’Arjuna, your skills will not hold good before Bhishma. You are trying in vain to conquer him as I had been watching silently all these 9 days. Call Yudhishtra immediately.’’ Yudhishtra came to Krishna.
‘’Yudhishtra, you are the chief of the Pandava forces. You must know that it is impossible to defeat Bhishma on this earth by any warrior. He is now fully concentrating on root out you Pandavas with a vengeance. There is no escape from this except by one trial. You must understand Bhishma’s principle which indicated to you already, that he will never take his arms against females or use any of his weapon against anyone who is not a male.
When I was talking to King Dhrupadh of Panchal, he told me that he knew of one princess Amba, who was disappointed with Bheeshma once and had meditated to god and obtained a boon to personally kill Bheeshma. She had meditated for long and ultimately had become a transgender person and I was told she is willing and ready to fight for Pandavas to attack Bheeshma and kill him. Amba is now known as Sikandi . She is the only one who can bail out you all against Bheeshma’s terrific attack on Pandavas. She had vowed to avenge Bheeshma for his injustice towards her. She had been wearing specifically a blue lotus garland for reminding her of the vow. Send for Sikandi now to replace me.
Krishna told Arjun and Yudhishtra “Look at my bleeding body. I have been continuously receiving all the arrows Bheeshma aimed at Arjuna and there is no space left for receiving any further arrows on me’’ (On some days, at particular timings, devotees can see the idol of Lord Parthasarathy (Krishna) with the marks of Arjuna's arrows on his face and body, in Sri Parthasarathy temple at Triplicane (a famous Divya Desa temple )
Krishna continued "'You know at one time, today, I was driven to the extent of breeching my promise of not to use any weapon in this war but forced to kill Bheeshma myself. I got down from the chariot, rushed to Bheeshma just picking up a wheel of the broken chariot to kill him myself. When he saw me nearing him thus, Bheeshma simply dropped all his weapons, folded his hands and invited me to kill him with my own hands. |He said ‘’ Krishna I am glad I made you participate in the war and made you touch a weapon and I succeded in my challenge to you. Please come and put an end to my life.’’ I calmed down and returned back to Arjuna’s chariot and till now receiving all the arrows sent by Bheeshma. Otherwise they would have killed Arjuna ‘’
Sikandi will replace me now to prevent me from the further attacks of Bhshma.
Thus on the 10th day with Sikandi wearing his blue lotus garland was the shield before Arjuna while he was fighting Bheeshma. Bheeshma realized that it was Krishna’s ingenuity in planting Sikandi before him, knowing his weakness. Sikandi was fighting ferociously aiming his sharp arrows on Bheeshma with a vengeance. But Bheeshma never countered the attack as it was against his will and determination to fight with a female or non-male person. It resulted in the advantage for Pandavas. Arjuna’s arrows were defended and Bheeshma never attacked back as his arrows might be on Sikandi shielding Arjuna. Sikandi’s arrows were not defended, in principle, as he will not fight with Sikandi, a transgender. So Bheeshma lost the fight bleeding heavily from Arjuna’s and Sikandi’s arrows and was slowly dying. He fell on the chariot with no more strengh to continue the fight.
The moment the supreme commander of Kauravas fell down on the chariot both sides stopped the battle.
‘’Arjuna, go to Bheeshma and help the great warrior’’ said Krishna.
When Arjuna lifted the injured and terribly wounded Bheeshma and attended on him Bheeshma slowly smiled at him and said
‘’Arjuna, you may not know and you are not old enough to understand, how a grand father would feel proud, and happy, when his grandson, acclaimed as a famous hero , fights with him and is honoured to die from the arrows of his affectionate grand son’
''Come close to me as I am finding it difficult to speak with heavy loss of blood. I don’t want to die now in this period of southward sojourn of Sun and will be waiting for next 43 days until the Sun’s norward sojourn commences. It is good to die at that time.
Fortunately I have been granted a boon to die at my choice to leave this world. You have to help me to wait comfortably till then in a corner of this battle field itself.
‘’How can I help you grand pa?’’
‘’Well. I know about your skills. You can make a bed out of your sharp arrows with a head rest.’’
Arjuna immediately made a bed of arrows for the great Bheeshma in the Kurukshethra battle field.
Bheeshma then called Yudhishtra. ‘’Dharmaputra, You are the chosen one to be taught byh me the thousand naamaas of Sriman Narayanan. Listen to them and memorise them.’’
Bheeshma then taught Yudhishtra the Vishnu Sahasra Namam, Sage Vyasa has compiled what Bheeshma taught Yudhishtra for the benefit of mankind and a great lady who lived till recently with us, in her enchanting voice had made it possible for us to hear it for ever in each and every Hindu home.
Dear children, do you need me tell what you already know of Bharath Rathna, M.S. Subbulakshmi and her resonant golden voice chanting the Vishnu Sahasranamam?) in your prayer room every day!
