Dear Children
81 ‘’A Life Saver ‘’
You have been reading quite a number of stories now about Mahabharath war. There are many who participated in in the epic war and the role of every one is unique and great because each of themd was special and gifted in one aspect or the other. One cannot be compared to the dother. Yet whose role is unparalleled and magnificent? Is it Dhuryodhan,Bheeman, Karnan, Arjuna or Yudhishtra? No. It is the one and only Krishna, will be the unanimous answer.
Though the war was between Kauravas and Pandavas only none of the heroes from any of these sides could match the role played by Krishna, who did not use any weapon or fought, and yet he is the manipulator, the chief architect of the entire episode.
You know now, who Gatothkach was, because you have read about him already. He was Bheema’s son born to his demonic wife Hidumbi. After his uncle Hidumba was dead, Gatothkach became the king of the forest and lived with his mother. When the Mahabharath war began, he joined the Pandavas forces.
Whenever Bheema thought of him, the next moment Gatothkach would be present to help his father Bheema and other Pandavas. So he joined the war when desired by Bheema, on the day Arjuna had to engage himself in the battle with the Trikarthas. Arjuna and Krishna left the battlefield and chased the Trikarthas and the Pandava forces needed additional strength. Gatothkach was very talented and his employing supernatural feats and illusory magic effects shook the opponents and trapped them to lose the battle and also their lives
Krishna knew Gatothkacha’s talents and efficiency and used him wherever needed. Gatothkach was also very good in handling and using the mace like his father Bheema.
After Jayadhradhan was killed by Arjuna, the Kaurava forces continued their fighting more angrily and fiercely. The war continued even when it was dark. Gatothkach was angry because his cousin brother and best friend Abhimanyu was killed by Kauruvas unethically, against all accepted principles of war, particularly when he was single, unarmed by many great heroes.
He was therefore personally interested to torment the Kauravas on the next day.
Here we have to recall some past incidents.
Soon after his uncle the king Hidumban passed away, Gatothkach took over the forest kingdom and organized it into a strong unit with many trained and powerful soldiers.
When he was thus busy in developing his kingdom, he happened to visit Indraprastham as an invitee for the inauguration and housewarming of he huge palace of Pandavas.
Pandavas were very happy to have Gatothkach with them for the happy occasion and he was treated as their honoured guest. Yudhishtra, in particular, liked his brother Bheema’s son so much. He in fact suggested to Krishna “Krishna, I wish you find a suitable matrimonial alliance for our Gatothkach.”
Krishna decided who was suitable match for Gatothkach.
You may remember Krishna before fighting a battle with Narkasur, destroyed another demon friend and commander of Narkasur, Muran.. Muran had a daughter named Kamakataangatha the demon princess and a fierce monstrous fighter of wars. Krishna knew this because he had to fight with her when she appeared in support of her father Muran. She attacked Krishna powerfully, cut his arrows and injured the Garudan very badly with her powerful sword. At one stage Krishna decided to use his Sudharsan Chakra against her when the Goddess Sakthi intervened.
‘’Krishna, please don’t kill her and don’t use your Sudharshan Chakra. It is I who gave her the powerful sword. I granted her the boon that when she used this sword, no one can win her. If your Sudharshan Chakra destroyed the sword I gifted, then it will be presumed that the Sakthi weapons are not unconquerable or invincible. Before Sudharsan Chakra everything is powerless is a known fact but still my devotee, Kamakataangatha, will feel that I have not given her a weapon she wished, an invincible sword. ‘’ Please therefore don’t destroy the sword and weaken her. Krishna appreciated the request of Sakthi and accepted it.
Meantime, the Sakthi devatha appeared before her devotee the demon princess Kamakataangatha, She advised her “’My child you don’t realize that you are in fight with Krishna, who in a way is your future father in law. It is essential therefore for you to fall at his feet and receive his blessings.
It should also be remembered that Kamakataangatha, a pure Sakthi devortee had prayed to the goddess that only he who wins her in any battle should be her husband. Since no one had so far met with success in fighting with her, she remained waiting for the winner, to be her husband. That is why when Sakthi goddess appeared before her and asked her to withdraw from fighting with Krishna and fall at his feet and receive his blessing. She did so.
Once Gatothkach came across her it ensured in a battle between them and he was surprised he could not win her despite all his supernatural abilities and efforts. He always prayed to Krishna as his Guru and mentor for guidance. Krishna advised him to fight continuously till evening until it was dark and then increase the force on her and think of Krishna while fighting with her. ‘’Gatothkach, you will win the battle and take her home as your wife’’
Do you remember Bharbarika, the mighty warrior. He was born to Gatothkach and Kamakataangadha. Gatothkach went with Kamakataangadha and Bharabarika when he was born to Dwarka receive his blessings. Krishna named Bharbharik as ‘’Suhridhya’’ (good hearted). Bharbarika grew as an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and Sakthi and went on Theertha Yathra (pilgrimage to holy places and bathing in holy waters) visiting many temples of Shiva and Dhurga and did poojas and penances. He thus was blessed with immense strength and powers. He in fact was granted 3 powerful arrows with which he can destroy anything, anyone ,everything and everyone.
Dear Children you read in Bharabarika story earlier. Pandavas once met him during their Vanavaas, at a Chandika temple, where Bharbarika was praying and worshipping the goddess. They blessed him.
Let us go back to Kurukshethra to watch the battle between Gatothkach and the Kaurava army. So the fighting continued fiercely even when it was dark, after Jayadhradha was killed. The mastery of his illusory attacks, magic effects and brave attacks disintegrated the Kaurava forces. Dhuryodhan went with anger to Karna to concentrate on attacking Gatothkach.
‘’This son of Bheema, the demon Gatothkach is destroying our army and killing many. It is high time you somehow kill him immediately and stop further destruction ‘’ pleaded Dhuryodhan.
Karna attacked Gatothkach but he could not stop further destruction of Kaurava forces. Karna finally decided to use the Sakthi weapon given to him by Indra on Gatothkach as he knew its power. In fact Karna was reserving it for killing Arjuna in the war. It could be used only once after which it will return back to Indra. Because of the urgency of the situation he had to use it on Gatothkach which killed him.
Kauravas were happy that Gatothkach was killed and the Pandavas were sad that they had lost a great warrior. Bheema was shattered Arjun could not believe that Karnan could kill Gatothkach. Yudhishtra shed tears for Gatothkach.
Krishna who was all the time tense now showed signs of relief as he heaved a sigh. Krishna knew of Karna’s strength and the secret of his terrific weapons. He thanked in his heart Gatothkach for saving Arjun’s life by sacrificing his by meeting the Sakthi weapon. If Arjuna fell to the might of Karna, then Pandavas would be doomed and can be easily won. So far Krishna avoided driving the chariot to any area where Karna was operating. Krishna was confident that he had saved Arjun from Karna, and from one of his dangerous invincible unconquerable weapons because of Gatothkacha’s life sacrifice.
