Dear Children
75 ‘ THE FIXED MATCH!!
In the last 3 or 4 stories we have been learning about the preliminary arrangements for the epic war between Kauravas and the Pandavas – the war was later named Maha Bharath war as it was the biggest and longest legendary war which shook the whole world then, with countless people dying and complete devastation of many kings and kingdoms.
We learnt about Karna in more than a couple of stories.
We will be learning about more and more heroes who participated in the war in the next 25 stories. Mahabharath war has numerous great warriors of fame whose stories are going to be thrilling for you.
It becomes necessary for you to be introduced to a great Tamil film which I had seen more than 50 years ago in a city theatre. It was a sensational movie which had many plus points, camera tricks, best story, dialogue, action by characters, music and camera handling to picturise and describe the Maya Jaal. The film named ‘MAYA BAZAAR’ was produced by Vijaya Vauhini studios in Kodambakkam, now in Tamilnadu. The film was made in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and other languages also. It was a magnificent gift to all Indians, by late Sri Nagi Reddy. It captivated every one's heart for the plus points I listed above, in particular Krishna enacted by late Sri N.T.Rama Rao, who appeared and lived in the mind and heart of every one on and off the screen as Krishna.
I introduced this story to you because of Gatothkach, son of Bheema who is actually the hero of the film for his special role effectively acted by late Sri S.V.Ranga Rao. He is still remembered by millions.
Dhuryodhan had a son named Lakshman Kumar. He wished to marry Krishna’s brother Balaram’s daughter Sasireka. But Krishna wished she should be married to Arjun’s son Abhimanyu because Krishna knew both Sasireka and Abimanyu loved each other. Krishna approved them as the best suitable couple. But Pandavas were in exile and Abimanyu with his mother lived away and there was none to support their wish and organize the matrimonial alliance.
Also both Balaram, the father of the girl and Dhuryodhan the father of the boy agreed for the proposal to marry Sasireka to Lakshminkumar. Date was fixed for the marriage. Sasireka was helpless as she desired to marry Abhimanyu only. Sakuni planned to get Balram’s support to Dhuryodhan and motivated this alliance and fixing this marriage. Balaram had a soft corner for Dhuryodhan because he learnt mace-handling techniques from Balaram and was liked by him specially. Since Krishna, his brother was a staunch supporter of the Pandavas, Sakuni and others planned to have the support of Balram for Kauravas by marrying his daughter Sasireka to Duryodhan’s son Lakshman Kumar and this marriage was a good reason for this. Krishna felt this arrangement has to be stopped.
"Subadhra, why don’t you visit Idumba Van with Abimanyu, honouring the invitation of Idumbi, the wife of Bheema. She has been inviting you to visit her for a long time is n’t it? Idumbi’s son Gatothkach is now the king of the forest Idumba Van. He was a cousin brother to Abhimanyu. Meeting him would be of great value for Pandavas in the ensuing war also. Your visit to Idumba van would be now timely and beneficial for Pandavas. You may go and meet them. Tell Idumbi that I wanted you to go and meet her and her son. Gatothkach likes me and will be of immense help to Abimanyu in the war"
Idumba Van was under security vigil by Gatothkach 's guards and the moment they found a chariot carrying strangers entering the forest, report was sent to Gatothkach. The securty guards fought with Abimanyu. They were easily killed by Abimanyu. Gatothkach himself appeared before Abimanyu and fought with him. The battle between them prolonged for long hours with none winning. The skill of Abimanyu was appreciated by Gatothkach who was an admirer of his father Arjun also. The cousin brothers were surprised to know each other. Very happily Gatothkach takes Abimanyu and his family members to his mother Idumbi.
Subadra, the mother of Abimanyu, and sister of Krishna, is welcomed by Idumbi. She learns of the love between Abimanyu and Sasireka and their disappointment because of the impending wedding of Sasireka with Lakshman kumar. Idumbi immediately conveys the news to Gatothkach and insists that somehow Abimanyu should get married to Sasireka before Lakshman Kumar weds her. Gatothkach decides he will do everything to stop the wedding at Hasthinapur and get her married to Abimanyu which was also the wish ot Krishna, his mentor and Guru. He prays to krishna and begins his plans to execute them properly.
As a part of the plan, one day prior to the wedding, he kidnaps Sasireka while she sleeps, along with her cot, from Balaram’s house, and drops her at Idumbavan at his place. He substitues himself as Sasireka and creates a good lot of fun, chaos and confusion in the wedding of Lakshman Kumar, using his matchless skills in maya jaal and magic spells. Everything and everyone under his magic spell creates and stirs a lot of commotion and confusion , disrupting the marriage
arrangements and plans. As ''Sasireka'' he makes Lakshman Kumar suffer a lot in her company, with the confusion he creates, and ultimately Lakshman Kumar runs away from her refusing to marry her. While everyone is baffled, failing to understand what was happening at the wedding hall, in Hasthinapur.
At the appointed time and date fixed for the wedding, Sasireka and Abimanyu are married in presence of their mothers and others at Idumba Van, while the wedding fixed at Hasthinapur was dropped. Everyone except Krishna, was trying to find out the cause of why Lakshman Kumar suddenly changed his mind and refused to marry Sasireka.
Krishna tells Balram at the appropriate time after the wedding of Sasireka with Abimanyu was performed at Idumba Van and the role played by Gatothkach for its success. Balram appreciates Gatothkach for his intelligent plans and execution when Abimanyu with Sasireka returns duly wedded. Every one in the family blesses them and a great alliance had taken place.
Everyone who had viewed the black and white film in the theatre returned very happily having enjoyed a show for nearly 3 hours forgetting themselves, like you dear children moving happily to the next story after reading about the memorable wedding. It was a great show because Krishna was the ''Director''.
