TATWA BODHAM - SRI ADHI SHANKARACHARYA - Commentary by Sri P.K. Venkatachalam
7. EASWARA AND ADHISHTAANA DEVATAAS
The Jeevaa's physical body is known as PiNdam and all such PiNdams and the gross bodies of the sense objects, including the world together, are known as Andaman or BrahmaaNdam. Thus, PiNdam is part of BrahmaaNdam. Both have risen from Sthoola Pancha Bhoothas. Sthoola Pancha Bhoothas have come out of Brahman through the play of Maya. PiNdam and BrahmaNdam are the same, except that PiNdam is small and BrahmaNdam is large. Both these are not apart from Brahman, i.e. they are part of Brahman.
In the creation of world, Sthoola Sookshma objects are present. Sookshma objects are coming out of the Pancha Bhoothas before pancheekaraNam. Sthoola objects appeared after the Pancha Bhoothas went into pancheekaraNam process. The creation is made with these Pancha Bhoothas. From Maya, which is the energy of Brahman, Pancha Bhoothas came. From that the Sthoola Prapancham (gross world) and the individual bodies (physique) came up. Brahman is the base of all these creations. When the Jeeva gets the knowledge, it sees Brahman in everything and everywhere. The relationship of Jeeva and world (PiNdam and ANdam) can be known easily.
Jeeva is Vyashti and Easwara is Samashti. That is, Jeeva is made of the 1/8th part of the divided half of the Pancha Bhootha and Easwara is part of the Undivided half of the Pancha Bhootha. This Jeeva is connected to the Easwara. Jeeva is within the boundary of ignorance and Easwara is the creation with Knowledge. Easwara is the creator and is all powerful. Jeeva is conditioned by the boundary creation and by the rules of creation. Jeeva gets connected with Easwara through Indriyaas. Easwara, who is the creator, is known as Bhagawan. Aiswaryam (Rich), Veeryam (Courage), Keerthi (Fame), Gnaanam (Knowledge) Selvam (Wealth) are the properties of Bhagawan. Bhagawan is ruling the world through certain rules. Gnaanendriyaas and Karmendriyaas are working within these rules. Eyes can see only if there is light and Ear can hear only if there is sound in space.
Gnanendriyaas
Indriyaas Function Nature Athi Dhaivam
Ear Hearing Sound Direction
Skin Feeling Touch Vaayu (air)
Eyes Seeing Figure Aadithyan (Sun)
Tongue Tasting Rasam Varunan (Rain)
Nose Smelling Smell Aswini Kumaras
Karmendriyaas
Indriyaas Function Nature Athi Dhaivam
Speech Speaking Sound Agni (Fire)
PaaNi Hands Holding/leaving Indran
Paadham Legs Walking Vishnu
Paayuru paayuh Yeruvaay Visarjan/excretion Mrithyu (Yamah)
Upastham Karuvaay Procreation Prajapathi
The work of the sense objects in the Nature is also governed by some Athi Dhaivam. Such as, the Athishtaana Devata for all rivers is Ganga and for all the mountains is Himavaan. Even the AnthakkaraNaas are also functioning within certain rules and they also have Athishtaana Devaas.
For Mind it is Moon; For Buddhi it is Brahma; For Ahamkaaram it is Rudran and for Chittham it is Vaasudevan.
Buddhi is capable of creation (of ideas and decisions) and hence it has Brahma, who is the Deva for creation. Ahamkaaram is capable of destroying human qualities and hence it has Rudra, who is the Lord of destruction. Similarly, each Deva is related according to the nature of the work of the AnthakkaraNa organs stated above.
Thus, all the things in the Nature and our bodies have distinct Devaas to rule over them according to the nature or work performed by the things and our organs.
