Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye Je - Sri Narsinh Mehta
Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye Je
Peed Paraayi Jaane Re
Par Dukhkhe Upkaar Kare Toye
Man Abhimaan Na Aaane Re
A Vaishnav (true devotee of the Lord) is one who
Knows the pain of others
Help those who are in sorrow
Without letting pride enter his mind
Sakal Lok Maan Sahune Vande
Nindaa Na Kare Keni Re
Vaach Kaachh Man Nishchal Raakhe
Dhan Dhan Janani Teni Re
Tolerates and respects the entire world
Does not belittle anyone
Keep his words, actions and thoughts pure
The Mother of such a soul is blessed indeed
Sam-Drishti Ne Trishna Tyaagi
Par-Stree Jene Maat Re
Jivha Thaki Asatya Na Bole
Par Dhan Nav Jhaalee Haath Re
Sees everything equally, renounces greed and avarice
Respects all women as his own Mother
Whose tongue knows not the taste of falsehood till the last breath
Never touches the property of others
Moh-Maaya Vyaape Nahi Jene
Dridh Vairaagya Jena Man Maan Re
Ram Naam Shoon Taali Laagi
Sakal Tirath Tena Tan Maan Re
Who does not succumb to worldly attachments
Who detach himself from worldly pleasures
Ever on his lips is Lord Rama’s Holy Name
All places of pilgrimage are within Him
Van Lobhi Ne Kapat Rahit Chhe
Kaam Krodh Nivaarya Re
Bhane Narsaiyyo Tenun Darshan Karta
Kul Ekoter Taarya Re
Who is not greedy and deceitful
Has conquered Lust and Anger
Narsi would be delighted to meet such a person
By whose virtue the entire family is liberated
Special Note
“Vaishnava Jana To” is one of the most popular Hindu Bhajans, written by 15th century Poet Narsinh Mehta. It is in the Gujarati language. This is one of the favourite Bhajan of Mahatma Gandhi and was included in His daily prayer. The Bhajan emphasises ideals of life a True Devotee of the Lord should follow in his life. The Poet finally says He would be delighted to meet such a person by whose virtue the entire family of him gets liberated.
Let us also include this in our daily prayers and make a sincere attempt to become a True Devotee of the Lord.
