Hari Thum Haro – Meera Bhajan
hari thum haro jana ki peer
Oh Hari please remove the sufferings of humanity.
dhraupadhiki laaj raakhi thum badhayo cheer
You protected the honor of Dhraupadi by lengthening the garment that covered her.
bhaktha kaarana roopa narahari dharyo aap shareer
For the sake of your devotee you assumed the form of Narasimha Deva.
hiranyakashyapa maar linho dharyo nahina dheer
You killed Hiranyakasipu with your fierce form.
budate gaja raaja rakhyo kiyo baahar neer
You rescued the drowning elephant Gajendra taking him out of water.
daasi meera lal giridhar dukha jahaan tahaan peer
People are afflicted with sufferings and pain, Oh my dear Giridhara. I am your servant Meera, requesting kindly remove to the sufferings of humanity.
Interesting Anecdote
“Hari Thum Haro” is the devotional song composed by Meera Bai, the poet saint. This song is one of the favourite one of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji once expressed the wish to hear M S Subbulakshmi sing this song. However Subbulakshmi was reluctant as she not practiced the song. Gandhi expressed that he would rather prefer to hear MS even if she merely reads it than someone else singing it. Feeling obliged, Subbulakshmi practiced, recorded the song and was delivered to Gandhi on his 78th birthday. After Gandhi's assassination, radio stations played Subbulakshmi's recording of Hari Thum Haro repeatedly after announcing the death of Gandhi.
