Dear Children
99 "VISWAVASU vs VIDYAPATHI''
You will find it very interesting to note from the history of the royal dynasty of the rulers of Odissha ( Orissa before) certain names are astonishing. Even if given a cursory glance, certain names impress us. There is a dynasty named as "Sailodhbhava'' dynasty. A king who was born in that dynasty was named Madhava Raj, according to the copper plates found about that dynasty. There are many kings who were in that dynasty with the name " Madhava'' some how attached to their names. '' Madhava Raj, Madhava Sree, Madhava Varma, Madhava Pravrithan, etc'' It gives us the impression that there were many generations of kings in that dynasty who were worshippers of Madhava (Krishna) !!.
Orissa has therefore many Madhava(Krishna) devotees. They have Dhwadhasa Madhavas (Twelve Madhavas) in twelve kshethras (holy places) where they go and worship Krishna. It establishes that in the particular region referred to abvoe, Krishna was worshipped as Madhava, that too Neela Madhava, which practice still continues in the said region.
''Neel'' represents dark blue. ''Maa'' represents mother, denoting Sakthi, and ''Dhava'' indicates pure white denoting the Universe. Therefore it is very simple to understand that the god of Protection, Lord Narayana, in his avathar as Krishna, is also worshipped as Neel Madhava, meaning, the powerful Sakthi protecting the entire universe, in his dark blue form.
There is a large blue stone present in the Neel kanthaara cave, where Jaganath is worshipped as ''Maha Neel mani'' an d have his dharshan.
Let us now enter the cave temple.
You were introduced to Viswa vasu, the pig breeder in the previous story. He was a hunter. It was his good fortune that he was lucky enough to locate Neel Madhava in the cave mentioned above, which no one noticed, and he worshipped the lord daily. He was extremely happy to daily visit Neel Madhava and worship him in his own way. He used to be friendly with Neel Madhava and talk to him.
. "Neel Madhava, increase the harvest, give us adequate rains, let us have more cows, pigs, goats and birds. Give us all in the family, long , disease free happy lives'' Viswavasu's prayer was heeded by Neel Madhava and all his wishes were granted instantaneously. Viswavasu very happy and grateful to Neel Madhava.
He used to gather green lettuce, spinach etc.,and various fruits, and carry from his house, milk, butter, and ghee etc., and these were daily offered byhim to Neela Madhava he found in the cave. After offering it he will take them home and give to all his family members. All of them were very happyand healthy. Neel Madhava's presence remained a great secret because other than Viswa vasu, no one knew where the cave was and how Neela Madhava looked like. Nothing was revealed to any one by Viswa vasu. So by all means, Neela Madhava was giving dharshan to only Viswavasu.
Though Viswa vasu was an illiterate hunter in the forest, breeding pigs, King Indhra Dhyumna, who dreamt about Neel Madhava was wondering wher Neel Madhava could be located and worshipped. He called many experts and learned Pandits, to trace all about Neel Madhava. They promptly told the king that in Kali Yug ( in the present aeon we live) Krishna appeared as Neel Madhava, The king Indhradhyumna, being a Krishna baktha, sent men every where, to every nook and corner, to find out the existence of Neel Madhava all over the country.
One of the messengers happened to pass through the village in the country, where the family of Viswa vasu lived. Viswavasu had a beautiful daughter by name Lalitha. The messenger who visited their village to find out the existence of Neel Madhava was named Vidhyapathi. When he landed in the village, he was very hungry with nothing to eat. Fortunately for him, he found the house of Viswavasu and tapped on the front door of their house.
Lalitha opened the door to see who was there at that time, because her father, Viswavasu would normally return late in the evening with all the pigs, cows and cattle. What we usually write ''Love at first sight'' really happened there when Lalitha opened the door for the ''hungry'' Vidhyapathi!! She fed him. He liked both the food she gave and herself. They talked for long. Finally Lalitha persuaded him to stay with their family in the forest.
Vidhyapathi happily agreed to stay. He waited for Viswavasu's return home that night. You know well, that both in the morning and evening Viswavasu used to visit Neela Madhava in the cave and worship and offer him his naivedhya and bring it home for the family. When Viswavasu saw the new guest in the house, he talked to him and soon he also began to like Vidyapathi.
Viswavasu arranged the wedding of his daughter Lalitha with Vidhyapathi. Three months rolled by the time after his wedding and stay with the family. Oneday he remembered his duty. He had been appointed by the Minister to trace if Neela Madhava was existing in the region he came for searching. Is n't it? That night he did not sleep.
Next morning Lalitha found her husband looking sad and worried. She slowly pumped out the information from him
''I must leave back to my place. The king will take my head'' cried Vidyapathi to his wife and started.
''Why should the king be in demand for your head? Does not he have a head of his own?'' she questioned him.?"
"Dont cut joke at this wrong time. I have been sent by him on a search mission but I did not do it?''
"The king wanted you to search what or whom? You have already searched me and owned me also. What else you needed to search?''
"Look Lalitha, I came here in search of a god by the name Neela Madhava?''
"Is it Neela Madhava?'' exclaimed Lalitha.
“ Have you heard about Neela Madhava? Do you know him?'' asked Vidhyapathi, quite surprised noting that the name sounded familiarity to her.
'' My father, is a devotee of Neela Madhava. Every day both in the morning and evening he visits him and worships and offers Nyvedhyam.(offering) Then only he will return home.
''Where is that Neela Madhava'? ' asked vidhyapathi quite eagerly.
''No one knows by my father. Neela Madhava, he said, will not allow any one else to have dharshan of him''
Vidhyapathi was very happy and dreamed of a very huge award from the King to fetch the information. He somehow managed to pressurise Lalitha to make Viswavasu agree to take him to Neela Madhava's cave. But on one condition. Viswa vasu will blindfold the eyes of Vidhyapathi, from their house to the cave. Open the cloth tied around his eyes in front of the cave to have dharshan of Neela Madhava and after the dharshan again blind fold him back to the house. This arrangement was to ensure that Vidhyapathi does not find the way to the cave by himself. Vidhyapathi was clever and so he took secretly some cereals and pulses with him, which he dropped on his way from the house to the cave. without the knowledge of Viswavasu. That night after the visit to the cave, Vidyapathi left the house without any one noticing him, and reached the king soonest he can. He happily declared to Indhra dhyumna that he knew where Neela Madhava was and can escort him. The King immediatey departed with him to the forest, traced Viswavasu and arrested him.
Viswa vasu's arrest, the unseen voice in the air, demand for the big temple on the blue hill, the huge neem tree floating in the see and landing ashore pushed by a giant wave, the Divine sculptor's engagement, the incomplete carving in the neem wood of Krishna, Subhadra and Balaram, the present appearance of Jagannath in the Puri temple, are all already known to you in the previous story. Where is the need then to repeat it my dear children?'
