Dear Children
94 ''WHERE IS MY BHEEMA?''
We all know that some are born leaders and some are made leaders. Born leaders not necessarily have to be qualified and fit to be leaders. By virtue of their birth, their race and link with the royal family, like wise some are born kings. By dint of their sacrifice, bravery and performance some become kings by unanimous choice.
Dhritharashtra, was made the king of Hasthinapuram, a kingdom he did not build up and owned by any of his efforts. His father died young. He had two half brothers or step brothers as some recognize, in Pandu, and Vithura. Unfortunately Dhritharashtra was born blind and was not found ideal or fit to be the heir to the Kaurava throne. His brother Pandu, ruled the kingdom, as the youngest one Vithura was not at all considered to be a claimant to the throne.
Pandu married two wives Kunthi, and Madri. Pandu killed a Rishi and earned his curse and died. Kunthi was the mother of the 5 sons known as Pandavas, sons of Pandu. Dhritharashtra was married to Gandhari, who gave birth to 100 children.and were known as Kauravas, (belonging to the Kuru dynasty).
Dhritharashtra though the legal heir to the throne was disqualified because of his blindness and Pandu ruled in his absence and died. So Dhritharashtra was automatially the king .
So the next claimant to the throne was to be either Yudhishtra, the eldest of Pandavas or Dhuryodhana the eldest of Kauravas.
Pandavas were preferred as they were strong, mighty, and clever and good to everyone. The fatherless children lived with Dhritharashtra and the Kauravas and suffered a lot due to Dhuryodhana's hatred for them. We need not go all over again to Mahabharath story and revert to Dhritharashtra only
Dhritharashtra, right from the beginning, was made aware of Pandava's right to the throne. their supriority over his own 100 children he knew well all the schemes his eldest son Dhuryodhana in association with his brothers and others made to destroy Pandavas and deprive them of their right to the throne.
Dhritharashtra also knew the plan of Sakuni and others against the Pandavas and was silent when they suffeed and injustice was done to them.
Dhritharashtra also knew of the impending war between his children and his brother's children. More than anything else, he also was well aware of Krishna's presence and support to Pandavas. He was ineffective and had no voice to raise against his sons' atrocities because he blindlly(naturally and literally!!) supported his son Dhuryodhana.
Dhritharashtra knew that all the neighbour and friendly kings had formed two wings supporting whoever they preferred, the Kauravas or Pandavas and a big war took place. He knew of Krishna's efforts to stop the war and to settle the matter peacefully between the brothers and its failure. He wanted his sons to win.
He was either powerless or did not prefer to involve himself in whatever his affectionate son decided and approved it. .
He strongly believed the Kauravas had the largest forces and that his son Dhuryodhan would win the war and would be proclaimed the king and so he wanted his minister Sanjayan to report to him every incident that took place in the war, as a running commentary. The developments did not make him happy as he found his sons were losing. He overlooked the presence of Krishna with the Pandavas . The war lasted for 18 days and he was a blind disappointed man at the end. When ultimately Dhuryodhan was also killed he realised he was alone in this world with none around him in spite of his having had 100 children. So all his pent up anger rose against the man who killed his pet darling son Dhuryodhan. Bheema was hated both by the father and the son right from the beginning as he was the one who thwarted all the plans of his son from the beginning.
Dhritharashtra therefore could not digest the thought that Dhuryodhan is no more and died because of Bheema. Whatcan he do? an old blind man?
With the war over, the Pandavas were returning victoriously to the palace of Hasthinapuram which now rightfully belonged to them. They are the kings and will rule the kingdom from now on.
They can arrest or kill Dhritharashtra also. But such a thought never occurred in the mind of any one of the Pandavas. They still treated Dhritharashtra as their uncle only. They never failed to pay their sincere respects to him and aunt Gandhari and sought their blessings. They made it very clear that Dhritharashtra would continue to be the king and Pandavas would only perform under his leadership. This news when it rached Dhritharashtra, he expressed outwardly his affection and love for Pandavas and greeted them for their victory. He therfore invited them to his palace and said he wished to honour them and their victory. Krishna also accompanied them.
When Yudhishtra and the others were proceeding towards the palace of Dhritharashtra, Krishna said '' Yudhishtra, can you wait for a while. i have some urgent work out. Let me finish it and come back and join you all to go and meet Dhritharashtra. Until then would you all wait for me.?'' Pandavas will never disobey Krishna, is n't i? They waited for his return.
Meantime waiting for a long time, Dhritharashtran sent messegers after messengers calling the Pandavas to visit him. Padavas responded to the invitation only after Krishna returned back.
Aunt Gandhari blessed the Pandavas. All of them prostrated before the old blind couple.
“Yudhishtra come near me'' invited Dhritharashtra. When Dharma went neared him and touched his feet, Dhritharashtra embraced him and blessed him.
''Yudhishtra, you are a very good person and the most famous in our clan to be the right king. I am very confident that you will rule our kingdom rendering justice and bring about a very good name for your fair mindedness, dharma, discipline and love for the people besides bravery.
Likewise he called all the others one by one. Nakula and Sahadeva were blessed by both the king and old queen. Dhrowapathi was received , and blessed by Gandhari and the blind king as a routine. Then came Arjuna to the old king. He was embraced and caressed head to foot by the blind king. ''Arjun, from the time you were a small boy, I know of your ability, talent and skill and dreamt that one day you will rise up as the most powerful and unconquerable archer in the world. My only regret is that I will not have the opportunity to see you and enjoy your skills with my physical eyes. I have heard enough of you from what Dhronacharya, Bheeshma and others told me. Sanjayan told me of your matchless feats in this war. You are born for archery. I am proud of being your uncle'' said Dhrithrashtra.
When Krishna went near him. ''Krishna, you are not to bow to me. I am the one to fall at your feet. If only I listened to your words and insisted my children to strictly follow it, they would be alive today. But how then, the bravery and mastery of warfare of Pandavas would have become known to the world at large. Will there be Gita if there was no Mahabharath war. Do you know how much I enjoyed and learnt from what you said to Arjuna. Sanjay told me everything and I drank happily through my ears the substance of the great Gita you taught. As you rightly said whatever has to happen will happen. Dhritharashtra sighed in distress.
''Where is Bheema, my loving child. I am yet to feel him here?'' Call him. He has gone out. He will come now any time replied Krishna and signed to Bheema not to make any noise. Everyone was wondering what Krishna was upto when he told Bheema was not there, because he had Bheema by his side all the while asking him not to talk. Krishna just opened the package he brought when returned to the Pandavas before they started. There was an iron doll look alike of Bheema. Krishna moved the iron doll near Dhritharashtra. He told the old king '' Uncle, here is the strong iron man Bheema, your favorite hero''
Dhritharashtra laughed like a demon ''Ha Ha Ha Ha ... Come near me my Bheema, I was waiting for you.'' He extended his hands to receive Bheema. The moment he located the iron doll he held it with a tight grip. He dragged it near him. There was a monstrous laughter from him. . “ Ah, My Bheema, come to me. How long I have been waiting for this moment. Come near me. How strong you are is known to me. You are the one who destroyed all your brothers, my sons without an exception. Your role is the biggest in the War in destroys us. Is n't it? You killed my Dhuryodhan with this strength in you is n't it? Let me embrace you. Dhritharashtra was a very strong man and reserved all lhis strengh all along for getting an opportunity to get Bheema near him and crush him to death. There will not be another opportunity to avenge his sons' death. Krishna read the mind of Dhritharashtra and he cleverly planned to get an iron doll in place of Bheeman when meeting the old blind king.
The fury, hatred, anger, frustration and jealousy the feeling of reveng all at once brought the required strength to the hands of the blind king who embraced the iron doll closely to his chest and applied the full pressure to crush it to pieces. When he found the crushing noise of the doll he thought he had killed Bheema and laughed loudly like a mad demon. ''I have piece of mind now only'' declared the old king. He believed his son Dhuryodhan's soul would be happy by what he did. Everyone was silent. I did what I wanted said Dhritharashtra. All of you may go.
Then when Krishna signalled to Bheema he announced '' Uncle I am Bheema here, I have come to receive your blessings. '' Dhritharashtra felt shy and uneasy when he heard Bheema. Was it not Bheema who was with me just now.? asked the old blind man with disappointment.
''It was not Bheema, King Dhritharashtra. It was an iron doll. Because we all know what was in your mind we had no choice but to bring an iron doll as Bheema's image. Now that your anger is finished and your satisfaction made you happy, here is the real Bheema to receive your blessing.'' replied Krishna.
'Dhritharashtrta openly cried. '' All of you forgive me. my partiality towards Dhuryodhan made me blind, an already blind man further, ''I am sorry for my emotional outburst. I am reformed now and in the days left for me from now on, let me join my wise brother Vithura and seek his guidance to transform myself. I bless you all m chidlren.'' Mind you, this is my sincere most wishes and no hypocricy in this which has been destroyed with the iron doll I crushed'''
