77 ‘’THE REDEEMER'S VISIT ‘’
You know now that Mahabharath war is nearing as both sides were preparing for it without rest.
They have reached a stage to fix the date of commencement of the war at the appropriate time.
In those days there was no guerilla type of war. Everything was fixed and announced well in time and the battle ground was identified. It was only a test of might and strength which ultimately decided who won the war. The war was also only between sunrise and sunset strictly.
It was a very pleasant evening and Sahadevan was in deep thought seated in front of a jungle brook,in the middle of a forest nearby. He selected a small square piece of rock on the bank of the river to sit and observe the crystal clear running water with ripples. Many thought waves were also likewise stirred in his mind in ripples endlessly. The place selected by him was silent except for the twittering of the birds, sound of the small branches and leaves of the trees rubbing against each other in the wind. A few frogs nearby in a pool were croaking incessantly. The fragrance of the sweet smelling flowers from the creepers and trees charged the air very strongly. A swan family was busily moving in and out of the water. In short, it was really a mini heaven on earth.
Sahadeva did not notice Krishna standing by his side. Krishna also did not disturb the thinking of Sahadevan. After some time, Krishna cleared his throat a bit loudly to draw Sahadeva’s attention but it did not work. So Krishna shook the shoulders of Sahadeva from behind and enquired:
“”Sahadev. What are you seriously planning ? to siege any fortress?
“ Krishna, it is my good fortune to have you here now. You asked me if I was planning a siege to get hold of some fortress. We are already losers of what we even had. What is there to gain or acquire anything afresh?”
“ Probably you were planning how to proceed with the war. Is it?”
“No Krishna, the war is inevitable and known well in advance. What use in my planning or thinking about its course ?”
‘’I see. Then you were perhaps in deep thinking how to win the Kauravas in the war?’
“ Why should I worry about the resut of the war?’‘’Sahadeva, don’t you think you too have responsibility to worry and think about the impending war?’’
” Krishna, are you under the impression that everything is happening as per my wish or desire “ so saying Sahadeva laughed.
“I am confused Sahadeva, because whatever you speak or talk or react is puzzling me ”
“ Sahadeva why no answer from you?“
”Come on Sahadeva, you are not revealing what is in your mind. Don’t you wish to tell me?’’
‘’Nothing Krishna, nothing. May I ask you to tell me whether the human mind can conquer destiny?’’
“Why this strange question now?Mind and destiny are creation and culmination of thoughts. Make it easy to understand!”
“ Krishna, this is your speciality which attract me always. You always clarify anything without detailing it. It is only you, who can do so . Krishna, let me ask you plainly, “don’t you know that this war is inevitable and pre-determined“?
‘’Krishna why do you smile without answering? You also know who will survive this war. Is it not true?’’
‘’Sahadeva, what are you asking me? What do I have to do with this war? Am I a part of it or involved in it but for the fact that you Pandavas are my best friends and asked for my presence without using any weapon ?!!
“Ha Ha Ha,” Krishna. Are you innocent?’’
‘’Sahadeva, you are now really baffling me! I don’t follow what you say!”
“ Krishna, you know in a puppetry performance, the artiste is not on the stage, he activates and automates the puppets to move about and perform by pulling the wires or threads connected from his hand to them. They move according to his manipulation and decision. This impending war, its cause, effect, progress and end result everything is in your hands. It is well known to me already!! Why should I worry about it? When you came here, I was only thinking of you! Something was disturbing my mind. Certain inexplicable uneasiness clouded my mind warning me that I am going to be the root cause for some problem and there may perhaps be a catostraphe arising out of this. It has been warning me repeatedly today. What is it and what can it be are the questions I have been asking myself till now. But, Krishna, whatever be it, you know it and you alone can redeem me or all of us out of the crisis is my strong belief. I was thinking of your help when you came here and that is why I told you ‘’ I was thinking of you’’
‘’Sahadeva, I dont follow what you say and what do you think I can do in this? You are all responsible for what you do and say and for the consequential reactions . For that why involve me? I just learnt that Dhuryodhan wanted to meet you and thought you may know the reason for his visit to you. If you did not wish to tell me about it, I dont insist ?
‘’Krishna till this moment I did not know anything about Dhuryodhan’s intention to visit me and I come to know about it for the first time only now from what you say! May be now I know the reason for my uneasiness and the resultant unknown restlessness’’
Krishna laughed and patted Sahadeva on the back.
“Sahadeva, what is to happen, will certainly take place, simply accept and dont worry about it. You are banking on me for helping you and it becomes therefore my concern to meet it on your behalf. It is no longer your burden but mine. Be it so’’
Sahadeva felt relieved and returned back after Krihna left him.
As Krishna forewarned, Dhuryodhan visited Sahadeva and requested him to fix the favourable time and date for appeasing the goddess of success with human life sacrifice for winning the war. Sahadevan was the best astrologer and when asked by Dhuryodhan, without any reservation, he verified the almanac, calculated the planetary position and movement and recommended the next new moon day to be ideal for human sacrifice to propitiate and pray to the goddess of war for Kauravas’ win in the war against the Pandavas. He did this because he will never misguide anyone if consulted him in good faith even if it was detrimental to himself!! Dhuryodhan knew this and availed the golden opportunity.
Krishna came to know what Sahadeva did and rectified the unfavourable situation by altering the best advantageous date and time to Bodhayana Amavasya (one day before the actual new moon day) to avail the benefit predicted by Sahadeva to Pandavas' favour. Accordingly Yudhishtra the head of Pandavas performed the sacrifice of Aravan's life as Kala bali (human sacrifice for favourable war result)
