Dear Children
71 ''THE UNRECOGNISED HERO''
I wanted to ask you a question. Do you find the stories of Krishna very interesting?
If they are interesting there is no special reason other than that they are about Krishna !!
Is it his beauty, grace, being blue reminding us of the endless skies and seas personifying infinity?
He is the Master of the universe but simple just wearing only a light, peacock feather as his crown ! He is the symbol of ultimate wisdom and knowledge. He is a poorna avathar. He never asserted as a God. He was and is just a friend, and timely helper for everyone. He was equally enjoying with perfect happiness both in the company of learned Rishis and the illiterate Gopas and Gopis of Brindhavan. He is everywhere, in everything and being in everyone granting tranquility and bliss. Is this not enough to explain why his stories are found interesting by you and every one?.
This happened when Krishna was returning from Hasthinapur. He was silent and thinking while seated in the chariot driven by Dharuka, The chariot was moving fast towards Dwarka. Krishna's peace mission had failed. Dhuryodhan and his brothers, did not accept any of his proposals to live peacefully with Pandavas or to share their kingdom in any manner. They were happy that there will be certainly a war between Pandavas and Kauravas in which his huge army which is many times larger and bigger and powerful than what Pandavas could gather, and so would completely annihilate the Pandavas to the last man.
Krishna was musing .....What did this mean, then ? '' W A R ''??
When the chariot passed through Viratnagar, Dharuk broke the silence. He was not ony a charioteer, but a good friend of Krishna.
''Krishna can I ask you something ?''
''Go ahead''
''We knew that Dhuryodhan had organised a comfortable palace for you to stay during your stay at Hasthinapur but you asked me to take you to the old Vithura''s cottage. Why you chose not to stay comfortably?''
Krishna recalled his stay with Vithura and smiled and did not reply. Dharuka continued;
''By deciding to stay with Vithura, you might have angered Dhuryodhan, because they all hated Vithura as Pandava supporter. Why did you do that ?''
'' Dharuka you asked the question and answered it yourself, why do you ask me for a further answer?''
''Oh is it so. What was the idea behind it ?''
''To kill two birds in one stone.''
'' Krishna you always say something not easily graspable. Can't you explain me''
" Wait and see. you will understand it yourself.''
We must know what happened at the Palace Court Hall When Krishna left after his Peace Mission failed. Dhuryodhan was veryf furious. He was shouting at the top of his voice. He never liked Vithura. Is n't it? When Krishna chose to stay with Vithura rejecting Dhuryodhan's offer to stay in the Palace it added fuel to the fire. By nature Dhuryodhan was also very suspicious and this had made him think that Vithura had betrayed him by revealing all the secrets of Kaurava forces and their weaknesses which would favour Pandavas. Krishna would have pumped out all the valuable information about Kauravas's strategies in the forthcoming war through Vithura . This has been Dhuryodhan's strong suspicion..
He called all his generals and began discussing with them their role in the war with Pandavas which has now been confirmed.
Delegation of power and responsibilities to various Maha Rathas, Athi radhas, Vyukas (the strategic formation of the army, cavalry, archers, and soldiers in different shapes) and the heads of the various Chakras and Vyuhas were under discussion. Vithura took part in the discussions being a great warrior and general. But he was insulted by Dhuryodhan because of his meeting with Krishna. In his view Vithura was a blacksheep. Dhrona, Karna, Bheeshma, Kripa etc., were identified as Heads of various Vyuhas and chakras, but Vithura was not considered for any importance or prominence.
Bheeshma the grand old man and matchless hero, was shocked and disappointed that the great Vithura was not given any importance.
Bheeshma got up when final announcements were made by Dhuryodhan, omitting Vithura, and explained the bravery, leadership qualities and efficiency of Vithura a specialist in Dhanurvedha, and great archer in the Kaurava clan. How the Kaurava army would be benefited under Vithura's command. Bheeshma therefore recommended Dhuryodhan to avail the best services of Vithura.
“ Stop it, Grand pa'' interrupted Dhuryodhan. Vithura will not be considered for any command responsibilities. He can work under the general appointed already.
Vithura who was listening to all these, got up and and spontaneously vowed and declared
''Dhuryodhan, you have insulted me more than enough and suspected my sincerety and honesty and love for you my children. You have branded me a traitor and openly negated my bravery, and ruled out my command and more than that you have broken my heart by talking ill of my capacity and capability in the warfare. I am blemishless and innocent.
With all your insulting me and injuring my feelings and disreputing my bravery, if I still listen to you and try to be of any use to you, then it will be denying myself any self respect. I will not participate in the war either in your favour or in favour of the Pandavas and immediately shall proceed on pilgrimage. My bow will not be used in the war.''
So saying the great Vithura broke his great legendary bow into two pieces and left it there. Vithura's vow shook everyone present in the Court Hall. Such a great commander and general is not going to be a part of the War for Kauravas.!!
Bheeshma was pained by what happened within moments after he recommended Vithura's command, to Dhuryodhan. He was nervous fretting and fuming. He addressed Dhuryodhan '' You fool Dhuryodhan, What a great damage have you caused to your own self.? You have lost a colososal, enormous support in winning your battle against Pandavas by losing Vithura. Foolishly you have weakened yourself. Krishna cleverly manipulated a plan to weaken you and you easily fell into his trap and now made it favourable for
Pandavas. ''
''Grand pa. What are you talking. How did I help Pandavas and what has it to do with my de-listing Vithura from commandeering our army?''
The grand old Bheeshma recalled an old incident for every one's knowledge then;
Once there was a Rishi meditating in a forest. His name was Mandavya. He was blamed for some reason by the Dharma Devta, and was punished. The Rishi was naturally angry because he never committed any mistake and did not earn the wrath of the Dharma Devta by any of his deeds. So he countered the Dharma Devta '' You blamed me and punished me for something which I have not done. I therefore curse you to be born in the earth as a human being and you will suffer and be insulted for all your actions which will be treated as '' mis deeds and betrayal'' .You will then realise and pay for what you did to me''
The Dharma Deva was born as Vithura. He was an expert in wielding bow and arrow and was a master archer. To defeat him in any battle wold be very very difficult.
Any defence against the arrows from the bow of Dharma Devta would be useless and powerless. So when Vithura broke into two, his great bow, the Kauravas have lost a great strength in the form of Vithura.'' Bheeshma narrated the above to every one's surprise and shock.
Kauravas and other generals in the court hall were spell bound when Bheeshma related the story of Vithura's background and regretted Dhuryodhan's short temper and suspicious mind which had resulted in their losing a great power they had, against Pandavas.
Krishna knew this and played his card effectively by opting to stay with Vithura, planting the seed of suspicion in the mind of Dhuryodhan. Dhuryodhan fell easily into the trap laid by Krishna, and the first ever win in favour of Pandavas was the absence of Vithura's might in the war to ensue against Kauravas.
Dear children, do you now realise what Krishna meant by referring to ''killing two birds in one stone''?
By being Vithura's guest, he on the one hand enjoyed the Dharma Devata's hospitality and company, and on the other hand, made Dhuryodhan reject Vithura's command and leadership in the war by insulting him, which ensued with Vithura breaking the mighty invincible bow. When Krishna spoke in simple words to Dharuka ''wait and see for yourself'' probably this is what he meant, is n't it?
