63 " A MAHA RISHI''
Dear Children
It is beyond doubt that people always want some recognition for what they did or said. It is proved by a story of Krishna’s times also. If some people learns something they immediately jump to conclusion that they have mastered the subject they just touched and learnt a bit and a few among them even go to the extent of claiming that they know more than others.!! Such misguided people believe in them to be so and expect recognition from the others where they meet with disappointment which disturb them.
Udhdhava learnt vedhas, Upanishads vedhantha and all other sastras like any other rishi of his time. But he began developing a thinking that he has learnt them completely, and mastered them. He was proud of himself. If a person repeatedly thinks and develops an image about himself, he becomes so, is n”t. So, Uddhava considered himself a “Maharshi” and wanted others to address him so. Regrettably, others did not do so and this eventually caused immense disappointment to Udhdhava.
Uddhava was very friendly with Krishna and he regretted that Krishna did not take any effort to contact many rishis known to him to ask them to confer the title of Maharishi on Udhdhava. Krishna knew what was in Udhdhavas mind . One day he called Udhdhava to his palace.
Krishna was discussing many things with Udhdhava. During the course of conversation, suddenly Krishna asked Udhdhava ‘’I believe, you have mastered all the vedhas, sastras etc., and there is nothing more to learn’’
“No doubt Krishna, I devoted my time to learn them all ‘’
I am very happy. Tomorrow I have to meet you again as I need you to entrust an urgent matter with you’’
‘’Certainly Krishna, I shall meet you tomorrow morning “
The next morning Udhdhava was waiting for Krishna at his palace. Krishna was very happy to find him waiting for him.
''Udhdhava, I chose you as the best person to do me a special favour. You know Radha, my best friend in Brindhavan. You have to carry a message for her. You proceed right now and meet her. I have to attend to something very urgent after you leave now. Krishna then quickly told Udhdhava where to fid Radha and sent him. Udhdhava was very happy that Krishna trusted him as his best friend and sent him on an urgent mission. So he left for Brindhavan. Krishna bade him farewell and left him.
Just then it struck to Udhdhava Krishna gave no message to be delivered to Radha.
So he asked Krishna, '' I am leaving for Brindhavan with your message to Radha. ''
''Yes Udhdhava, when you find Radha, just tell that you have a message from me '' Without waiting for Udhdhava's response or reaction Krishna left him.
Udhdhava went on his way to Brindhavan.
He stopped before reaching Brindhavan thinking ''what message is there with me to be conveyed to Radha from Krishna?. How to convey any message with nothing to inform, written or given by Krishna?” It is my mistake not to have reminded Krishna that he forgot to give me any written message to be conveyed to Radha. But I can rectify the mistake.” Udhdhava decided to create a message and so he took a palm leaf and wrote a message’’ Dear Radha, hope this finds you in good health. I am fine here. I have not met you for long and hope this will find you and all others in Brindhavan in good health. Hope to receive your reply message for me you may write or inform Udhdhava. He will convey to me” Your Krishnan. Udhdhava now was happy, at least, he has a message to be delivered to Radha.
On reaching Brindhavan, he located Radha’s house and met her. Radha was very happy to see Udhdhava, Krishna’s best friend and to know Krishna sent him to meet her. So she received Udhdhava heartily and extended all courtesies to him. She enquired about Udhdhava”s welfare and extended all facilities for his comfortable stay at her house. Udhdhava was very happy that Radha showered affection and love on him because he was Krishna's friend. But he was surprised she did not ask him, anything about Krishna. So after waiting for some time, he handed the palm leaf to her saying Krishna sent you a message. She took it from him and read it and laughed heartily.
Udhdhava was surprised and so he asked ''Radha, why did you laugh?’’
“ I laughed at what Krishna wrote in this ’’
‘’What is there in it to laugh about?’’
‘Krishna has written in this palm leaf, ‘’Udhdhava has not learnt his lessons completely yet "
Udhdhava was wonder struck. He was intelligent. He wrote an ordinary message to her as if it was written by Krishna, but this Radha says something totally different. She talks about his knowledge and mastery of Vedhas. How does she know about his anxiety to get the title of Maharishi conferred on him because he has learnt all he has to learn? Why did Radha say that Udhdhava has not learnt completely yet, and that Krishna wrote so in the palm leaf! Udhdhava knew what he wrote on the palm leaf he handed Radha and why she said something very strange and concerned with his learning''.
Udhdhava was perplexed to imagine that an illiterate cowherdess in Brindhavan could talk about what was in his mind and his intention to seek Krishna’s assistance about it. ''Now it is clear that Krishna did not help me get the Maharishi title because according to him I have not completely mastered the subjects to make me fit to receive the title i sought.''
Radha observed Uddhava’s uneasiness. See volunteered to tell him
“Dont be surprised Udhdhavaji, let me explain you. Both Krishna and I love each other so much that there is nothing which we think differently unknown to each of us. No one can really understand the type of divine love we have for each other as there is nothing equal to it anywhere to understand it. We are just physically separate in different gender that is only the difference but we breathe the same and think alike. There is therefore nothing for Krishna to write to me and there is nothing i need to write him back. When you therefore gave me the written message purported to have been written by Krishna it was strange and I thought of him and found out what he was thinking of you which I convyed to you. Nothing remains for me to know or understand anything about Krishna which I did not know already and it is so with him about me. We don’t expect anything from each other as there is nothing to look for . My thoughts are Krishna’s and his are mine. We both are selfless and our pure love has made us inseparable and it is not at all outward. Such being our relationship there is absolutely no necessity for one writing to the other any message which needed to be conveyed by any external means. that is why I laughed when you said you brought a message from Krishna for me and your ingenious thinking of creating a letter on behalf of krishna only proved that you have not understood or learnt what pure love means and who Krishna is.
People have to exchange their thoughts when they are not similar but different from each other in all aspects. You are a learned person and you know what is Advaitham, which means there is only monism not any dualism. Is nt it? . Krishna and Radha is one unbreakable inseparable unit or entity. If it is understood everything would be crystal clear. Is n’t it? This is how a baktha identifies himself with the god he worships. It therefore makes no difference if I live in Brindhavanor by his living at Dwarka, he being a King and I, a cowherdess. I don’t need to go to him and he does not require to visit me. There is no need for expressing a thought between us, as every single thought is the same with both of us.''
Udhdhava was dumbfounded. ’Radha, I thought you are an illiterate cowherdess in the small village of Brindhava, but you are an exponent of Vedhantha explaining it so fluently.''
Radha laughed again. She politely replied him ''Udhdhavaji, Dont use big big words. To dedicate one’s heart and mind to God, why education or any training is needed? If everyone I lsee is a Krishna, why there is any effort needed to go and look for him somewhere else? Why a teacher for this?''
When Udhdhava returned to Dwarka, he was a completely transformed person. He met Krishna the next day. Krishna never asked him about his visit to Radha but smiled at him which was completely meaningful for Udhdhava. Udhdhava never opened his mouth and say anything about his visit to Radha. ‘’ I went to Brindhavan and returned yesterday, Krishna’’ is what he uttered.
Krishna replied. ‘’Udhdhava I spoke to many spiritual persons and they are going to honour you with the title ‘’Maharishi’’
Udhdhava now fully transformed did not show any interest in acquisition of any title. He fell at the feet of Krishna and said ‘’ i don’t need any title Krishna. Let me be with you and continue my learning ’’
‘’Udhdhava, my hope that one visit to Brindhavan would remove the clouds in your mind had proved success. A visit to Brindhavan and meeting with Radha had opened your inner eye now. I am happy with you and confident that whatever I teach you, will reach through you after me to everyone to know because there is no special qualification needed for any one to acquire knowledge. It will come by itself if you keep youreyes, ears and mind open, only mouth to remain closed. knowledge is for knowledge sake only in day to day life. I decided this long ago.
Krishna’s last talk with Udhdhava, had been written by Maharshi Udhdhava as “’Uddhava Geetha’’ (Hamsa Geetha’). Incidentlally, this is the last teaching of Lord Kishna on earth, an upadesa given by Him to Maharshi Udhdhava to spread to us. Is it any wonder that Udhdhava is known as a Maharshi, found fit by Krishna to do this for us?
