Dear children
60 “ The inner and outer beings ‘’
Krishna's thoughts are always centered on protecting us. His teachings are subtle and simple but not direct. If we develop ourselves and mature we can easily understand his ways. A student of 1st standard cannot understand the physics and maths formulae until he gradually learns and develops his knowledge, after passing several grades, Is n't it?
Krishna and Rukmani were once on a visit to one of the villages on the banks of Yamuna. Krishna was reminded of his childhood days and took Rukmani with him to the Yamuna river and walked along the river bed in the wet sands. It was very early in the morning when they walked along. The season was also rainy and windy but Krishna was very happy to walk bythe side of the river which was running in full spate. He enjoyed seeing the bulged river he had seen many times in the past in full floods. Krishna looked across the broad river and stopped suddenly. under a tree, and his eyes remained fixed at the other side of the river. They were returning to the cottage they stayed which was near the spot where Krishna halted and appeared to have suddenly remembered something and asked Rukmini :
‘’Rukmani, can I ask you to do me a favour?”
‘’Krishna, do you have to ask me? you can just command me, to do anything you wish, because I consider serving you to please you is my prime duty which gives me immense satisfaction’’.
“’Are you able to see the ashram on the other side of the river bank from here, exactly opposite where we now stand?
“Yes, I could see across the river a big thatched shed covered by palm leaves surrounded by many trees.”
‘’That is where, I know, sage Dhurvaas would now be camping and staying. I was told that he would be around this time in the ashram you saw.”
“Oh,I see. It is very nice”
“I promised to send him a good variety of food made by you, and he welcomed it. So I want to surprise him today by sending through you some delicious food items . I wish you can make and carry them across to his ashram before noon and personally serve them to him and come back. Can you do that quickly?
Rukmani said '' It will be done immediately"' She rushed back to the cottage where they stayed and began preparing the best items she could cook quickly. It was windy and rainy season and the Yamnuna was swollen with current and freshes.. Krishna watched Rukmani thoughtfully as she was getting ready to prepare the food.
By the time Rukmani had finished cooking all the food items and got them nicely packed, she took Krishna’s leave and proceeded towards the river to cross and reach the ashram.
Rukmani was disappointed as there was no boat available to cross the river and there was no way she had no means to cross the river
She rerturned back to Krishna after waiting for long as no boat showed up and time was running out to take the food across to the ashram.
‘’Krishna how can I cross the river with no boat or craft to sail across?”
Krishna appeared to be thinking what to do for a while and told Rukmani,
“Rukmani, I would suggest your calling the goddess Yamuna and ask her allow you to cross the river as instructed by the “Nithya brahmachchari”. She may accept and help you.’’
“ Krishna, who is that “Nithya brahmachaari?”
“’Why, it is me, who else?” replied Krishna just smiling at Rukmini who did not react; she was wondering within herself how Krishna can call himself a ''nithya brahmachari'' having married eight wives including herself?” Any way she just obeyed what he said and went to the river bank, She called ''Öh Yamuna Matha, I have been told by the Nithya Brahmachari to ask you to show me a way to cross the river to the other bank”
There was a whizz of sound in the air, and the waters in the river churned forcefully, parting into two halves making a passage for Rukmini to walk across the river bed to the other bank”
Rukmini was surprised and puzzled. She knew Krishna’s ways and never questioned what he said or instructed, but could not understand the goddess Yamuna admitting Krishna as the nithya brahmachari, and was thinking all the way until she carried the food items to sage Dhurwasa, who was actually waiting for the food for him and his disciples.
The sage was very happy that Krishna remembered his promise and sent such delicious food items cooked by Rukmini and served by her personally to him and his disciples. They all had a very good feast and enjoyed the items she served and nothing was left remaining in the basket she brought.
After taking leave of the sage and receiving his blessing she went back to the river to cross but the river was back to its original flooded state running fast with freshes. She was wondering how to cross the river. Sage Durvasa who walked with her upto the river bank, observed her plight and asked her if she brought any boat to cross the river and where was it now ? Rukmini told him the story and the sage too laughed..
He advised Rukmini not to worry and call the goddess Yamuna and ask her to provide the passage as she did earlier as instructed by the Nithya Upavaasi.
Rukmini was baffled, and wondering what is this game these two are playing? She looked at the sage and he understood what was working on her mind. She was afraid to ask him any question knowing how quick tempered he was and powerful in cursing people when in anger. The sage saved the situation for her and smilingly told her:
"'Rukmini the nithya upavaasi is me, the sage Dhurvasa only, and you may just do what I said and you will be helped by the goddess Yamuna''
Rukmni did not say anything or question the sage how he could be an “’upavaasi”(one who fasts without taking any food) because he just finished eating a sumptuous feast brought by her!!
The moment she appealed to Yamuna, as instructed by the sage Dhurvaasa, the river promptlyh obliged as before, and this increased the curiosity of Rukmini who walked through the river , back to her cottage where Krishna was waiting for her. She was repeatedly asking herself how Krishna could be called a ''nithya brahmachari and this sage Dhurvasa, a nithya upavaasi.''
When she enered the cottage and met Krishna, he simply addressed her ‘’ Rukmini I am glad you fulfilled my idesire and made a good feast for the sage and returned fully satisfied that he enjoyed your food”
Rukmini just nodded her head but did not comment anything as her mind was still confused how ‘’Krishna the brahmachari and Dhurvasa the upavasi” could be?''
What are you thinking Rukmni?
''Krishna, I confess I don’t understand anything you or the sage said but wonder how the goddess Yamuna too accepted these when I cannot accept.?”’
“’What are you saying Rukmni, make it clear to me?”
Rukmini narrated what was eating her all the time. Krishna had a hearty laugh and replied her
‘’Rukmini. When you heard me and Dhurvasa, you were only identifying us both as the persons appearing to you physically in our respective bodies. You never thought beyond what you looked. Both me and Durvasa are nithya brahmachaari and nithya upavaasi inasmuch as our Athmas remain so for ever. All that the bodies indulge and commit at any time, never get attached to our souls within which remains detached and is non-influenced”’ We, within are different from what you see in exterior, which Yamuna knew and obliged when asked by you”’. You will understand this clearly when you are prepared to understand at the appropriate time”
