Dear Children
17. CONCLUDING RAMAYANAM
Eknath was a Mahan from the Marathi community. He was a very sincere Krishna devotee. There are so many incidents in his life which proved his true devotion. One such incident is given in this story.
In the same town where Eknath lived, there was an old Brahmin Pandit by the name Krishnadas. He had strong belief in Astrology. He had a wish. He had been collecting a lot of information about Rama and wanted to write a story about Ramayana. He started writing the book also. Almost at the finishing stage, Krishnadas's Astrology Guru came to see him. This Guru was not an ordinary person. Whatever he said came true. Krishnadas told him about his initiative about writing the book and said "Guruji! I will finish writing this book in another 15 days".
Guruji laughed. Krishnadas questioned him for the reason for his laughter. Guruji said "Krishnadas! I came here to tell you something important. Before you finish your Ramayanam, your life will be over". Krishnadas got a shock of his life. "What are you saying Guruji?". Guruji replied "Yes. Krishnadas! You will live only for three more days" and left.
Krishnadas was still in shock. He wanted to finish his Ramayanam but knew he cannot do it in 3 days. He remembered Eknath. He ran to Eknath and requested "Sir! I need a favour from you". Eknath said "Whatever you want please tell me. By the blessings of Vittalan, everything will go well".
With tears in his eyes, Krishnadasar fell at his feet and said "Swami! I had a wish. I had been collecting so much information about Rama and with that, I wanted to write a Ramayana story. I am almost at the finishing stage.". Hearing this Eknath answered "That’s good. Please continue your writing".
Krishnadas wept and said "How can I complete it sir? According to my astrologer, I have only three days to live. So I want you to finish the rest". Eknath declined gently "How can I write? I am not a good writer like you. You please finish it".
Krishnadas cried "I cannot finish it in 3 days". Eknath asked "How many days you need?"
Krishnadas replied "I need at least 12 days more". Eknath said: "Alright. You start writing".
Accordingly Krishnadas stayed in Eknath's Ashraman and wrote the book. He took 13 days to finish it and he was very satisfied. After finishing the book, he kept it in the feet of Eknath and prostrated. He did not get up.
What happened? Yes! The astrologer's words came true only with a small change. It was not 3 days but 13 days. How was it possible? To save the honour of his devotee Eknath, Vittalan just extended the life of Krishnadas by 10 days. That’s all.
What do we understand from this story? Vittalan would do anything to save the honour or word given by his true devotee.
