Dear Children
56. "The Palace"
All went well with the Pandavas as they were growing along with their cousins in Hasthinapuram. Later they were given an unfertile remote land for developing and ruling themselves. With the help of Krishna, Pandavas flourished. Who will not?.
A fine city state came into existence. It was named Indraprastham. The eldest of the Pandavas, Yuthishtira was made the king and the other four brothers were holding different portfolios to assist Yuthishtira, who was known as Dharma Raja because of his honesty, equanimity, truthfulness, fair mindedness etc. Since everyone was treated with respect, impartially, the people were very happy to be ruled by Dharma Raja.
Word spread like forest fire in praise of Pandavas, their exemplary governance, the unity of the mighty brothers and the fertility of the state etc.,
Krishna used to meet Pandavas frequently. Once he visited Indraprastham.
He was received well and Yuthishtira was talking to him.
“Yuthishtira, I am very glad to hear that people are very happy in your kingdom and there is incessant praising by them which reached Dwarka also.”
“Krishna, if the report was otherwise, it then would reflect on me as a king who failed in his duties. If I have performed normally as a King then this should and must be the reaction of his citizens, I feel”
“Is it true, Yuthishtira, that of late, many people have migrated from other states to Indraprastham because of your excellent governance? . Also I heard that other kings are jealous and envy of you, Pandavas. Many tell me that there is no door at all to any house in Indraprastham because there is no thief. No separate kitchen in any house, because you feed all the people daily. Women feel, I am told very safe to walk even at dead night all alone in Indraprastham.. I am very glad Yuthishtira to get such good reports about your kingdom”
Yuthishtira laughed heartily on hearing Krishna saying these.
“Why do you laugh Yuthishtira?”
“Krishna, don’t you realise that having been trained by you, atleast our Indraprastham should prove to be a mini Dwarka in its standards ?”
“Dharma, I forgot to ask you. Why don’t you all have a big palace to live in this capital city?”
“Krishna, we feel we have ample space required for our living in the quarters we live in this building and feel no need for any big palace”
“No. As a king you should live in a palace, see, your cousin Duryodhana in Hasthinapuram palace. How big and spacious it is?”
“I am sorry Krishna, I have no interest in the pomp and glory”
“It is no pomp or glory, Yuthishtira, a king living in a spacious palace is what is expected by people and accepted by the king in every kingdom. Don’t you know?. Whether it is your wish or not it is a decorum to be followed?”
“What usefulness it will give me Krishna?”
“Why do you look at the usefulness or result of anything you do, The sun and rain, the day and night perform their routine without waiting for any result. Happiness and tragedy will be part of life which a sane person should accept equally unaffected by its result. In fact your goodness will be the cause of the danger you may expect from others also! Whatever you do as a good act may cause immense damage to someone else. What ever has to happen cannot be prevented. You have to accept."
“Krishna, we always follow your advice. I accept your suggestion to build a big palace for Pandavas in Indraprastham. In fact, I feel Arjuna was also saying about this."
Krishna smiled. “I will talk to Mayan, the Deva sculptor, to design and build a palace for you" . Krishna departed.
Soon a great palace was constructed and made ready in all aspects. All the neighbour kings and royal families were invited for the house warming celebration. Duryodhanan and company also visited and marvelled at the beauty of the palace and its excellent construction. From that night he lost his sleep because of his envy and jealousy. He could not accept Pandavas living so luxuriously, praised by all from every quarter. He wanted them to suffer. He was wondering how to achieve it. You know there are Sagunis to play the desired role in the life of every one.
Uncle Saguni devised a scheme, Yuthishtira was trapped. The Pandavas lost everything in the dice game Yuthishtira played with Saguni, including their upper clothes. They had to roam about in forests and be incognito for a year and late to reappear, fight with Kauravas, destroy them and rule the entire kingdom for some time.
Dear Children, who knows, except Krishna, that there has to be a war to destroy the bad Kaurava clan by the Pandavas and Krishna paved the way and initiated for this result by goading Yuthishtira sowing the seed for the war to take place later by arranging to build the palace.
That is why we say God’s ways are mysterious, is n’t it?
