Dear Children
55. "Maya"
Today you will be again meeting our old and clever sage Naradha. You know already how intelligent and a good foreseer and troubleshooter Naradha is.
This story starts with our finding both Naradha and Krishna walking, together, in the beautiful breezy morning alongside the banks of a river near Dwarka. They are so close to each other and are engrossed in some talk of mutual interest. It is customary for Naradha to always ask Krishna to clarify some points or doubts he had and Krishna liked Naradha’s searching questions, finding it interesting to answer him.
So, on the particular day, when they were talking and walking together, Naradha asked “ Krishna, I know and use the word "Maya" to the extent I understand it and still I am not sure whether I have fully understood the Maya you create, in its true sense. I would like you to explain this to me”
“Naradha, you always ask very interesting questions and I will try to explain Maya to you.But you interrupted some other subject we were talking now happily, and I cannot recall what we were discussing about. Any way, don’t worry, let us walk upto the small hill there ahead".
Krishna talked and walked with Naradha covering some other subjects. They reached the foot hill and Krishna said “Naradha. I feel very tired and exhausted. Let us sit here at the foot hill" They both sat there under a tree.
Suddenly Krishna asked, “Naradha, can you do me a favour?”
‘Tell me my Lord. What can I do for you?”
“Having walked for so long, I feel quite thirsty, can you obtain a pot of water from one of those houses you see there” said Krishna pointing to a group of huts away.
“Within minutes I will be back with water” said Naradha rushing towards those group of huts.
Naradha soon stood before a hut. A beautiful young girl came out of the hut asking him what he wanted
“Can you get me a pot of water to drink?” Naradha's lips were asking for water but he was observing the girl’s beauty and lost himself. The girl brought the pot of water, but Naradha found himself bewitched by her beauty, talking to her about her parents, her interests in life etc., expressing his interest in her. The girl too was fascinated by him equally. They discussed for hours and at the end were planning about marrying and settling down in life. The girl wanted her parents’ approval. She asked Naradha to talk to her father and obtain his consent for their plan to marry each other.
Naradha waited for her father, a forrester,, who came in the evening. Naradha greeted and talked to him. The father too talked to Naradha and found him a very knowledgeable person and most liable personality. So when Naradha asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage, the father said he will consult his wife and daughter and asked him tos tay that night in the hut. The father consulted his daughter and wife. They all ultimately unanimously agreed for the wedding of the girl with Naradha. So the next morning, the father talked to Naradha and expressed the family's consent. He stayed in their house for some months. Soon the wedding was fixed. Naradha became a lovable son in law and in course of time became a father of two children also.
Years now passed and the two children were growing. One day a tsunami like flood swept over the village and flooded the huts. Everyone ran way trying to escape from the fury of nature. Naradha’s hut submerged in water. He caught hold of his wife, and carried the two children and was trying to get out of the gushing waters. Many were lost. Naradha tied one child on his head, held one child on his shoulders and tied his wife to his waist and was swimming to reach the shore. Suddenly a forceful current caught him in the flooding waters, pulling him into the deep, Naradha was losing his balance while swimming with his wife and children held on his head, shoulder and tied to his waist. The smaller child on his head was snatched away and lost in the gushing waters. Naradha shouted and cried. While trying to catch the child separated from his head, he lost his balance and grip over the older child on his shoulder and that child was also was carried away in the floods. His wife who saw her children being carried away by the floods chased them and was drowned soon. Naradha within moments, lost his wife, children and was left alone. He was desperate and cried. It began raining heavily and he swam in the turbulent waters, lost his strength, swooned, but as he was holding on to a fallen tree branch, drifted directionless for long, and ultimately was washed ashore on to some sand bank. The floods also slowly receded.
Naradha was lying unconscious for how long, days, months, and years? He did not remember!
He slowly regained conscience and opened his eyes and blinked here and there trying to identify where he was lying. His eyes found Krishna standing before him.
"My God, Krishna, it is almost 15 years since I left you? What happened to me?” cried Naradha.
Krishna laughed.
"Naradha, I am waiting for nearly one hour since you left promising me to get a pot of water quicky!. I came in search of you and find you here lying down. What happened to you?”
“Krishna, what are you telling me. Is it only an hour or so ?... no almost 15 years since I met you, is n’t it?. My wife.. my children...??”
“Naradha, are you mad, get up, what are you lamenting? Are you caught up in any "Maya?” Naradha understood that Krishna answered his question of what is Maya and its effects!!! His married life was a weird dreamlike imagination as he found the water pot next to him!!
They walked back from the foot hill back to Krishna’s palace In Dwarka, but all the while Naradha was pinching himself to doubly check whether he was still under the spell of Maya!!
Dear Children, was this story interesting to you?
